Very Selective School

A view from a venerable Verrian on the issue of making a certain Very Selective school co-ed :

Dear fellow Verrians, WRT to the above, I am typing the following with aheavy heart - hopefully it is not true. Recently, I have heard of rumour that VAC/VEC are having plans to convert our alma mater - the 129 yrs old all boys Very Selective school into a co-ed institution (ie boys and girls studying together), and a proposal has already been submitted to the ministry. This piece of rumour really disturbs the deepest core of my spirit. If this comes true, I seriously wonder generations of Verrians to come will be to able share the same passion, spirit and espirit de corps as we do??? Hopefully this is will not come true....Anyway may I propose OVA to verify this rumour withVAC/VEC on behalf of all old boys. Hope to hear some good news soon... Thanks Aaron (President OVA)...

A follow up post:

Hi All, the discussion to have Very Selective School co-edu have been discussed many times over. There are always the 2 camps. Some old boys with girls would certaintly like to carrying on the tradition of having both their sons and daughters in the same school. Personally, I prefer to keep it an all boys..there's not many around and there's that something about growing up in an all boys school!

The other disturbing "rumours" is the Principal of Very Jovial College is tabling a proposal to the Executive Committee to change the lyrics of the school anthem. From "thy sons are we..". The reason? Some girls gave the "sons" reason for not wanting to enrol in Very Jovial College. This was verified by my son who said she mentioned it during the assembly. It think it's lame and frivolous..doesn't someone understand that "sons" is a generic term to mean both sexes..? Or should we also now raise objection topeople calling the school as "she" or "her" or "mothernature".. I say to those girls who are giving the excuse, perhaps Very Jovial College is not for you...There are other more important things to make the Verrian spirit a stronger one..

Another extremist point of view:

What? Co-ed school? I dissent! Very Selective School is and always has been an all boys school. What will happen to the camaderie, the Verrian spirit and the brotherhood of boys who will become men? The proposal is utterly disrespectful of our traditions and rich heritage. Very Jovial College yes, because it had no history. But Very Selective School? Might as well ask Retarded Incubation to take in boys and Rubbish Girls School to take in girls! There are good reasons why single-sex schools exist. Like GK Chesterton says, before you take down the fence, make sure you know why it was put up in the first place!

Didn't Very Selective School used to have girls too?

She started from all boys to mixed and back to all boys again.

They added girls when the government pushed for "Pre-U" courses, thus girls joined Very Selective School after Sec4 (I think). When the government pushed for Junior Colleges, Very Selective School reverted back to all boys, with the birth of Very Jovial College.
