On Thursday, when I was so hoping towards german classes, it happened to be a public holiday. Schade! But being the dutiful kulturprogramm enthusiast, I signed up for the Kulturprogramm, in which i had to pay 5Euro for a bus tour around Berlin's Innenstadt. A tourguide who could speak English, had an immense knowledge of history, not only Berlin's history, but also a knowledge of history on everything. I only half comprehended what the tourguide was explaining about on Wednesday when I had a tour of Mitte, and having an English tourguide was almost soothing and less brain-wrecking.
Today, I met a Thai and 2 PRCs during the bus tour. What was interesting to follow up after the bus tour was that these 2 PRCs insisted on finding the statue of Karl Marx on Alexander Platz. For a moment, I was thinking that it's only a statue, and what's the big deal of it? It was only after a while that it dawned upon me that Karl Marx was the Father of Communism and it's naturally that those 2 PRCs wanted to take a photo with the Karl Marx statue and yes... so correct was I, and so wrong was I that they took such a long time to get their glamour photo shot done. I donot know how many photos they took, but it was almost an eternity. They took half body shots, full body shots, 180 degrees paranomic shots in different lighting, angle and perspective, and while all these was done, I went to eat a bratwurst.
For lunch, I was totally dying to eat some rice, and some less salty food, because the almost of salt they sprinkle onto french fries is tremendous! With some luck, I found a Vietnamese eatery, and for the first time in Berlin, I finally ate rice. It was a monumentous historical event. Rice.
For dinner, it was not without an adventurous endeavour again to try to eat something different. I ordered Asparagus soup, and it tasted a little odd to my tastebuds, somewhat sour though. I'm therefore beginning to extinguish my spirit of adventure, wait till someone who knows what's good and bad recommend me something nice to eat.
Today, it was a hasty morning trying to clear up the mess and smell before my landlady arrives back home. I accidentally left the bread too long on the toaster while I was pouring milk, and it turned black, and smelled really terrible. I've not seen my landlady, Ursula for 2 days, wondered where she has been?
The weather has also downslided into a cold rainy season, as opposed to the few sunny and warmer days when I first came to Berlin. The coldness is quite unbearable on the streets, and now I am less inclined to explore the city, as I donot want to walk the streets, huddled up like a shapeless mass.
Thanks to everyone whom I've talked to on MSN or HP, who have SMS-ed, who have left comments on the blog, who have one way or another communicated with me, to have thus made me feel more comfortable in Berlin.
