K Shane : hahaha since you don't think you are the "K Shane ... the cool guy" no more, I've changed your blog description (on the left) to "K Shane ... the new creation ..."

It has been a stressful week, not lax.
And everything is irritating me to the max.
Throbbing headaches to accompany me till sunday.
And I'm stuck here doing duties again. HOORAY.
The TanTraumatic Tarantula is back.
And the Koh-Blooded Lizard is away and I'm left to cover his tracks.
This stressful week - will end. WILL END. will end.

SIGH. I've the whole day here to myself; five black seeds for wasting my time here and one white seed for thinking about stuff ...

Anyway the first thing I would like to comment about is * drumrolls * FITNESS!

What defines fitness?

Often, I hear people calling a guy fit just for the simple reason that he looks massively well built.

He just looks fit based on the assumption that he lifts weights, dumb-bells, goes to the gym, buys silly TV-innovation products to trim his abdominal fats, and he is also probably a frequent customer of GNC.

Girls who adore hunks, guys who secretly envy his bod cease that admiration!

I wouldn't call that fitness. I would call that craziness. Who would want to spend so much money buying those potentially harmful products and devote hours in the gym to attain that greek-god-adonis bod? Allow me to elaborate more on the products that are consumed. Usually, the health supplements would mean ingesting creatine, whey proteins, and even growth hormones. What's the big deal of these products anyway, one might ask. They are natural, and are found in the body too! If taken in excessive amounts, creatine causes dehydration; growth hormones are as scary sounding as their functions. Who knows what will happen if the hormones tip off the balance of hormones in your body. What will happen? Can anyone provide an answer?

Last year, I was appalled when I saw my classmate taking creatine gel just before his IPPT test. His results? He failed!

Only cretins take in creatine!

The most distasteful looking humans are the full-time weight-builders, and I can't believe weight building is even called a sport! It's the "Pain Behind the Scene" sport.

They look humongous no doubt, and terribly out of proportion. Short and massive and not impressive! Every pack of muscle looks more like a disfigured slab of barbecued pork meat sewn on as haphazardly as a zombified limb to a horrified torso. The flesh looks worse when it's waxed. It looks like honey-glazed beef that has turned cancerous from a cow that has been genetically modified.

Why that crazy to sweat it out in pain at the gym? It's painful: for your muscles to grow even larger, you have to work out at more strenuous rates to break down the muscles and allow them to grow back to a larger size.

In the name of attractiveness, is that the answer? Probably so.

What about tanning? Why are there over the counter sun-less sun-tanning lotions in the market? Sun-tanning salons are riding the waves nowadays. I suppose people want to achieve the tan-look without subjecting themselves to the harmful UV-rays.

In the name of attractiveness, again?

What is the impression that is attached to being tanned? Sporty? Cool?

Boys are thrilled by sport-stars, and it's like the transfer of David Beckham from Manchester United to Real Madrid is more important news than the Marriott Bombings in Indonesia.

And I believe that The New Paper is total crap. If you want comprehensive news, there's always The Straits Times. Sports news becomes the most enticing news in The New Paper. Other the sports news, The New Paper is gossipy, and writes on bizarre news that ST cannot be bothered to publish. Even Streats is much better compared to NP, and Streats is free too!

And I notice that people around me nowadays are vying for the "Asia" section of ST, not because they want to read news to find out if Mahathir has died in a car crash or whether Esrada had an extramaritial affair but they're just after the "Sports" section (as you would have guessed). The rest of the valuable news in ST is forsaken. The New Paper has no fame, but shame.

Once I asked myself, if I had the choice of being famous, would I choose to be famous in the field of the academics or in the sporting arena?
It was a hard choice, if I were famous in the sporting arena, I would easily become the country's national hero, attain lots of money and fame, and my name would be imprinted into the sports records.

And what about academics? I could become a mathematician and theorize new formulas; I could become a philosopher and have my thoughts being known to the whole world. I could be a great scientist - with my new inventions and new discoveries and theories. With that, I would be as famous as Einstein.

But the question was, how long would you be famous for your achievements? Would you be famous for years? Decades? Or even centuries?

Sports? I never thought so. The first Olympics was held in Greece. Are there any records of famous Greek sportsmen or rather warriors? If you were going to name me Perseus, Jason or Hercules, you can smack your head with a slipper.

Even if anyone had achieved fame in breaking the old 100m-race record, someone in the future will be able to break your record. Therefore, your fame and your name in the record is only temporary; it will not last for centuries. Every human being ages, grows old and dies. A sportsman has only limited time for him to show gain fame, he could probably play competitively till 40 years old and that's it for him. The rest is history. He could probably be a coach, a famous coach for some years, and soon he would also be forgotten. Locally, take Fandi Ahmad for example, he was all the hype in Singapore football in the 90s, although in my personal opinion, he wasn't that spectacular. You hardly hear any news about him now. He is a married, is a dad and a coach who hasn't risen from his footballing ashes.

I could name a dozen Greek philosophers and mathematicians, whose names and theories have survived for over thousands of years. Even if their theory were to be proven wrong some time in the future, in records, it would not be discarded into history. In fact, the flawed theory will often be presented first, and the new theory that has replaced it will both be recorded into history, just like Newton's Laws of Motion. Newton's Law of Motion is slightly flawed and although Einstein's theory of relativity seeks to replace it with a better theory, Newton's Laws survived because it still has its practical use, and it will always be regarded as a stepping-stone to Einstein's theory.

I wouldn' mind being a famous philosopher. My ideas will be known throughout the course of the History of Philosophy. I wouldn't mind being a famous musician, my works will survive as long as Bach's pieces have survived (nearly 400 years).

It has been too much about fame. No, I'm not after fame and fortune but rather, I think I want to be free and happy. This week was extremely stressful, and this stress now I realized, is all created by the act of mine. Being my usually competitive self, I fought hard to finish the tasks in the fastest possible time, and even resorted to multi-tasking, but eventually I ended up with a multitude of aches - head, heart and body. I think it is senseless now to rush for something that is absolutely none of my concern. Why type the document faster when later people accuse you of being too free? From now on, I will take my time to do things. :)

Thanks to kwaire for her beautiful insight into freedom and religion. But I would like to tell everyone that sometimes, one should believe in a God. I am not purely agnostic. I came from a Catholic primary school, and therefore have some religious influences when I was young. I believe sometimes that we should pray, sing Christian songs, it kind of makes me happier and uplifted, for some strange reason or another. It is this miraculous heavenly feeling that is totally indescribable during my first class cell group in school. We used to have this praying session during lunchtime every Friday, and it brought me lots of spiritual blessings at the end of the week. Every session seemed like closing one chapter of a schooling week, and opening another chapter, praying for new hopes and beginnings. I felt very happy there.

When some things do not come my way, nowadays, I wouldn't harp so much onto it, but I would leave it in hands of God. It shall be the will of God. And when Christians talk about the love God has for us, I believe it is there. God will not create miracles for us, but he will provide the strength for us to create that miracle. And to me, praying and singing is a way that I have the strength to overcome the odds and difficulties in my life. God only helps those who help themselves.

And about freedom? I agree with kwaire that Man can never ever gain absolute freedom unless he decides to live like a hermit. Most religions promise freedom from earthly desires and sin, that I agree with kshane.

Most religions have their own set of rules for their followers to abide, and kwaire thinks that with these rules, one can never be totally free, and worse, be tied down by these conformities. For Christians, you have the 10 Commandments, and for absolutely strict Buddhists, monks and nuns lead austere life. But I was thinking that perhaps by following these code of conducts, the religion is perhaps proposing a way of life that is good and divine, that promises a release from sorrow, and evil? In this way, although one has to adhere to the strict codes, but if one feels 'released' and free, why not adopt the religion and its commandments?

I am not very sure about this, but I think Buddhism promises absolute freedom, unless I have interpreted it wrongly. Once one attains enlightenment, one escapes from the wheel of reincarnation and achieve a state of nirvana. Buddhism teaches you to control your anger, suppress jealousy, and other stuff, and the Buddhist anecdotes are wonderful too. Sorry, but I cannot give any examples here, but if you come across one, you might feel a tinge of being enlightened. :) And if you do, tell me about it.

God only helps those who help themselves.
